Too Many Startup Programs
Every program that opens when the computer starts uses memory and slows everything else down. Many of them are not needed.
A Full or Failing Drive
A nearly full drive slows the whole computer, and old mechanical hard drives get slower as they age. Swapping to an SSD can make an older computer start and open programs much faster.
Not Enough Memory
Modern browsers and apps need more memory than older computers were sold with. Adding RAM, where the computer allows it, gives programs room to run.
Malware or Unwanted Software
Malware and adware run in the background and use your computer's memory and processor. Pop-ups you did not ask for are a common sign.
What to Try Before You Call
- Restart the computer properly, rather than just closing the lid.
- Check how much free storage you have. If the drive is nearly full, delete or move large files you no longer need.
- Turn off programs you do not need at startup. On Windows, use Task Manager, then Startup apps. On a Mac, use System Settings, then General, then Login Items.
- Install any waiting updates for Windows or macOS.
- On Windows, run a full scan in Windows Security.
